Position Summary:

The position is responsible for planning, organizing, promoting, and facilitating Friends of Karen’s special events that are run by the Melville, NY office. The Development Associate should enjoy special event management, provide outstanding customer service, be an enthusiastic professional and be able to build relationships with the community, corporations, state, and local government and with donors. Additionally, the position includes administrative and financial responsibilities as outlined below. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required. The job will be hybrid, allowing for some remote work. While we are not requiring an advanced degree, responsibilities, and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

How You’ll Help Us Be Successful:

  • Engage community through the creation of innovative fundraising initiatives including a thorough planning schedule while growing all our existing fundraising efforts handled by the Long Island office through collaboration with the Regional Director and the rest of the Development Team.
  • Supervise, plan, and organize two major events (Annual Gala and Annual Walk/Run Team) and additional programs on Long Island.
    • Included, but not limited to, organizing support committees and volunteers, planning logistics, obtaining auction items and in-kind donations, designing invitations, and preparing and maintaining event mailing lists.
    • Negotiating with vendors on best pricing/best quality for event sponsorship deliverables.
    • Overseeing LI Gala & Walk/Run Team registration and sponsorship deliverables onsite on the day/night of the events.
    • Conducting pre- and post-activation follow-up with donors and provide necessary data/pre- and post-event reports.
  • Coordinate with Westchester office on NYC Gala and other fundraising activities, including newsletter submissions and website review.
  • Serve as spokesperson for Friends of Karen at community forums sponsored by civic, business, school, and religious groups.
    • Including attending community meetings and networking events to assist in broadening our base of prospective donors and supporters.
    • Assisting with the development of presentations and other documents as required.
  • Perform weekly check deposits and credit card submissions.
  • Oversee the Long Island database of volunteers.
  • Be the staff lead that meets monthly with the Long Island Junior Advisory Board.
  • Other projects as assigned by the Regional Director.

What You’ll Need to Be Successful:

  • Not-For-Profit experience preferred.
  • Commitment to philanthropy with knowledge of fundamental disciplines of resource development.
  • Professional individual with creative talent.
  • Display a positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense, and good listening ability.
  • Presentation skills that include excellent written and oral communication.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Database management with proficiency in basic computer skills including Word, Excel, MS Office, Power Point and Raiser's Edge or equivalent software.
  • Exceptional writing and analytical skills and budget development experience.
  • Social media experience a plus.
  • Good time management skills
  • Ability to work effectively and resolve problems as part of a team with willingness to take on non-routine tasks to move team effort forward.
  • Possess the skills to work with and motivate volunteers.
  • Strong commitment to the mission, policies, and goals of Friends of Karen.
