Social Work Month 2021 - Sarah
How has Covid19 affected your work with families?
Covid19 has turned the world upside down. It has isolated many and made life even more challenging for families who have someone who is critically ill, but our Friends of Karen families are resilient and so are we. As a Friends of Karen social worker we did not skip a beat. We jumped right into action and thought about what extra strain Covid19 was putting on our families. We understood that they would need extra money for food, additional financial support for travel and child care for siblings who were now home from school all day long. Families needed help paying their internet bill so that their children could participate in virtual learning.
FOK Social Workers were able to help keep families stable during an extremely challenging time for the world. We met the families immediate needs and continued to support their emotional needs as well. I am grateful for being able to continue to be a life line for families over the phone and virtually. It does not feel the same to not meet with the families in person but we are all skilled Social Workers at FOK and we can adapt our normal way of working with families in person to supporting families over the phone and virtually. It does not feel the same as when we are with the families but we know that it is what the families need at this time. I am thankful that FOK has been able to support the families in so many ways throughout their child’s illness and Covid19.
