Francisco Barrenechea

Francisco is a Vice President in the Structured Lending and Special Situations group at Morgan Stanley. He previously worked at Morgan Stanley’s Investment Banking Division and as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company. Francisco holds a BS in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Tec de Monterrey (Mexico) and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. In his spare time, he enjoys playing soccer, skiing, reading and traveling.

Pamela Hervey

Pam Hervey joined the board of Friends of Karen in 2002, after learning about the organization from a friend and then spending some time volunteering. With a young child and another on the way at the time, Pam was moved by the practicality and compassion in the support Friends of Karen provides to the families it serves.

Tom Jocelyn

Treasurer

Tom Jocelyn is President and CEO of Scientific Electric Company (est. 1941), a specialized electrical contracting firm that has helped build many of New York CIty’s iconic parks and landmarks.

Jonathan Malawer

Jonathan Malawer joined the board in January 2020. He wanted to become involved with a charitable organization that he found meaningful. He immediately connected with Friends of Karen. He found the organization’s work and contribution to the community incredible and personally related having lost his childhood friend Brian in 2010 to Leukemia.

Louis Meltzer

With over a decade of real estate experience, Louis Meltzer is the principal of LEM Equities, LLC a real estate investment and management company based in Westport, CT. Prior to starting his own company, Louis was Vice President at Four Springs Capital Trust, a private net lease REIT.

Mike Nieves

Mike Nieves is the SVP, Finance and Treasurer at Penn Entertainment. He previously worked as a real estate investment banker at JLL and Citigroup, advising clients on strategic transactions. Prior to this he worked as a corporate associate at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP.

Laura Salerno-Evans

Vice President

Laura Salerno-Evans became involved with Friends of Karen as a teenager after attending the organization’s annual gala. She later joined the New York City Advisory Board in 2011 and soon after, helped establish the Next Generation Leadership Group to bring awareness of Friends of Karen among other young professionals.

Evan Schreiber

Evan Schreiber joined the board in March 2021. He wanted to get involved with a charitable organization and immediately became passionate about supporting the critical mission of Friends of Karen.

Evan works in finance for a healthcare technology company in New York.

Paul Smadbeck

Immediate Past President

Paul joined the Friends of Karen Board in April 1996. He attended Ithaca College, receiving both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Music, and is a published composer.
