Loving Words in a Valentine’s Poem from Friends of Karen Children

At Friends of Karen we have the privilege to witness acts of love big and small on a daily basis.  Difficult times may elicit a range of reactions among the families we work with, but fierce love is always the common denominator. Whether it is acts of bravery, steadfast resilience, quiet moments of connection or the compassion of helpers we can’t resist an opportunity to celebrate love in all its forms.

Our Sibling Support Specialists created this poem with past and current Friends of Karen children and their siblings to craft something beautiful and sometimes silly —voices woven side by side, each line carrying a piece of love, courage, and imagination. On Valentine’s Day, a time for hearts and hope, these young writers share what love looks like to them: in small moments, big feelings, quiet strength, and unbreakable bonds. Every word here is a reminder that even in the hardest seasons, love finds a way to grow, to shine, and to be shared. Please enjoy the sweet poetry written by our favorite valentines. We hope it warms your heart on the coldest days of the season.

Card for brother

Love is…

…My dad taking care of me

… Squeezing Mommy’s hand when I get poked at the doctors…

… Love means being kind to people and showing them you care for them

…My family

…The world

…my stuffie named Stripes, Valentine’s and hearts…

… Love is my baby brother, my big sisters, my cousins who are over all the time and my friends who understand me…

…My mom’s homemade brownies…

…Love is about getting hugs and holding hands…

…Love is watching the snowfall outside…or finally getting the chance to sled really fast down the hill- holding my little sister tight…

…Love is when our hearts are connected to others

…Family dinners with familiar faces and our favorite foods…

Facetime from the hospital even when we are apart…

Love is feeling like you belong…

… my Legos ( they don’t know I love them because Legos are plastic)

…Aunt and uncles and people who help

…special time with Pop Pop

….Dance parties in the kitchen and snuggle parties for movie nights

…Ringing the bell and my whole family cheering…

…People we love who are here, in our hearts or in heaven…

Love is what makes you smile even when you are tired…

… Daddy throwing me pop ups after a long day of work, my aunt braiding my hair when my mom can’t and my abuela making my favorite dinner for me…

…Playing dress up, Sonic the Hedgehog and Fortnite with friends..

…Oreos, mac n cheese, tacos and bowls and bowls of ice cream..

… Love is birthday cakes, dandelion puffs and running through sprinklers on a hot day

Love is the extraordinary families at Friends of Karen who inspire us with their embodiment of the word every day.
